Pastors Summit to replace ACE in 2014
Because of the need to connect with pastors and allow pastors to connect with one another, a Pastors Summit will replace the time scheduled for the ACE Conference in 2014, said David Johnson, Arizona Southern Baptist Convention executive director.
The ACE Conference “had its place” and was “a valuable tool,” Johnson said. However, NET 21, the Sunday School/small group training event now held annually, “has taken up the mantle of that and is fulfilling a greater purpose. Now I believe it is time for us to gather pastors so that we can talk about how to best accomplish our mission.”
The summit will be held at North Phoenix Baptist Church, Jan. 31-Feb. 1. It will begin with dinner on Friday night at 6 p.m. and conclude on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. There will be two sessions on Saturday morning, beginning at 8:30 and 10:30, with brunch at 9:45.
Jeff Iorg, president of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary will be the speaker. As a former church planter, pastor and state convention executive director, “he’s in a unique position to be able to speak to pastors,” Johnson said.
Iorg’s wife, Ann, will speak to pastors’ wives during a session on Saturday. “It’s important for pastors’ wives to connect with each other, because the pastor’s wife often has a lonely place of ministry and service,” Johnson said. “Pastors’ wives need other women who can understand and talk with them about the challenges they face.”
The Pastors Summit will follow the November ASBC annual meeting, where messengers will be asked to adopt new vision and mission statements and core values for the convention.
“If our vision is going to be accomplished, it is going to take pastors leading their churches to engage in the mission,” Johnson said. “I felt that this year, the opportunity for pastors to get together was crucial to the accomplishment of our vision.”
At the summit, Johnson said he plans “to ask pastors personally if they will lead their churches to engage the vision that we’re casting for Arizona.” Pastors are “the stakeholders of this vision and it’s not a convention vision,” he said. “It’s a vision of the churches, and the pastors lead the churches.”
The Friday night session will include “some pastor appreciation time,” Johnson said. “We’ve never really had a venue to recognize pastors who have served faithfully and well for years and years in Arizona, and I think it’s time for us to say thank you to those pastors.”
The registration deadline for the Pastors Summit has been extended to Jan. 24, 2014. Conference participants will receive a copy of Dr. Iorg’s book, Seasons of a Leader’s Life. In addition, four iPads will be given away.
