An exciting new discipleship gathering is being planned for this summer.
Eddy Pearson, Arizona Southern Baptist Convention evangelism/discipleship facilitator, said the event, dubbed Mathetes, will be a new kind of gathering for Arizona Southern Baptists.
Mathetes will feature Ed Stetzer, author and president of LifeWay Research. Pearson said the morning 90-minute session will answer the question why discipleship matters and deal with the reality of change. Stetzer will speak first, followed by a panel discussion featuring Arizona pastors. Finally, those in attendance will have small group discussions.
The afternoon 90-minute session will focus on intentional plans of discipleship and will feature the same format as the morning session. Live testimonies will be interspersed in the program.
Pearson said Mathetes, New Testament Greek for disciple, is a new offering unique to Arizona, and one that was designed with Stetzer in mind as the keynote speaker.
"Some of the staff heard (Stetzer) speak and we decided we needed to get him to come to Arizona," Pearson said. "Mathetes is the idea we came up with it. Disciple is a noun and a verb -- it not only describes who we are but what we do."
Stetzer has written many books and articles on discipleship and how to implement discipleship groups in the local church.
Pearson said Mathetes, scheduled for Aug. 23, is for all church leaders and will help them think through discipleship and develop plans for their local churches.
"We want our people to be stronger in the faith and to make stronger disciples," Pearson said. "This will help them think through discipleship and how to apply it."
The gathering will help church leaders define what it is to be missional and determine how to engage in relational discipleship, he said.
Registration for Mathetes will be limited. The $20 registration will cover refreshments and the morning and afternoon sessions, but participants will be asked to have lunch on their own for a time of fellowship and continued discussion. The gathering will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Register online or contact Corrin Statezny, 480-945-0880 or 800-687-2431. Deadline is Aug. 15.
The event will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 2532 W. Peoria Ave., off of I-17. Pearson said the hotel has offered a discounted rate of $69 for Friday night for out-of-town attendees.
Mathetes will be preceded by the annual Church Planting Retreat, to be held Aug. 21-22 also at the Crowne Plaza. While church planters are encouraged to extend their stay and attend Mathetes, Pearson emphasized that it will be beneficial to all church leaders.
NET 21, which was held the same weekend last year, will be moving to Feb. 21, 2015, and will be organized by Valley Rim Association, Pearson said.
